Many of those who posed in naturist resorts for photographers were professional models rather than genuine naturists. One of the handful to buck that trend was Elizabeth Walker, née Elcoate Gilbert, who was routinely described as Naturism’s Ambassador. She was a member of Spielplatz and as early as 1950 and regularly featured in magazines such as Health and Efficiency and The Naturist. In 1955 she met former RAF pilot Edward Craven Walker at Spileplatz. Craven Walker found fame and riches as the inventor of the lava lamp, but he was also something of an evangelist for the naturist movement. Not only did he set up his own nudist camp near Ringwood in Hampshire, called the Bournemouth and District Outdoor Club, he also directed and produced three films on naturism under the pseudonym Michael Keatering. The films were Travelling Light (1959), Sunswept (1961) and Eves on Skis (1963). This photo is by Bertram Park at his home in Pinner. With his wife Yvonne Gregory, Bertram produced a number of photographic books of the female nude such as The Beauty of the Female Form (1934) and Sun Bathers (1935). Bertram Park (1883-1972) was a renowned portrait photographer whose work can be found in the National Portrait Gallery. In 1916, he married the photographer Yvonne Gregory. Along with fellow photographer Marcus Adams, they established themselves as the Three Photographers. Their studio at 43 Dover Street in Mayfair was initially funded by the Egyptologist George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

Yvonne was interested in the female form as an artistic element, and in 1929 they published their first book together called Living Sculpture. The details of their working relationship are vague, and there is little indication to who actually took the pictures. Their book Sun Bathers (1935) was quite groundbreaking in that it didn’t pretend to be a guide for artists, a ploy that was still common into the 1950s. After the war, they continued to take nude photographs which they supplied to the naturist publications of the day. Horace Roye (born Horace Roye-Narbeth, 4 March 1906 – 11 June 2002) was considered one of the top British photographers of the 1930 and ’40s. His father was a socialist, but his mother had her own income and insisted on sending him to a private school, which may explain his right-wing views in later life. He didn’t particularly distinguish himself at Godwin College in Margate and was expected to join his father’s drapery firm. To gain experience he took a job at Debenham & Company. Arriving for work one day in tails after a night out he got the sack. In August 1924, driven by an insatiable desire for new experiences he boarded a ship to South Africa, where he got a job on a farm. The hours were long, and he had a lot of unsavoury jobs to do — worst of which was castrating sheep with his teeth. Not surprisingly when a new opportunity arose, he took it, and that’s how he became a diamond smuggler. When that got problematic, he returned to London where he tired his hand at numerous jobs. Roye’s restlessness no doubt was part of his nonconformist and often downright rebellious character. Fond of boxing and partial to a “good scrap” he went around with Sir Oswald Mosley’s Fascists and the Communist Party on alternate nights.

Around this time Roye was a bookmaker, dance instructor, night club owner and the Assistant Director to E. A. Dupont on the film Piccadilly. In addition, Roye’s interest in photography was growing. He visited Walter Bird’s studio to learn about the darkroom side of things, and to study Walter’s approach to the art. In time he felt he had learned enough to set up his own studio. Bored of London, however, he decided to go to Rio de Janeiro but that didn’t work out, so he went to Paris instead. To start with the vast majority of his sitters were British or American but as his reputation grew his clientele became French. His situation, however, became acutely difficult when he was accused of blackmail and of employing a young Swedish girl without the correct work permit. The increase in hostility to foreigners due to an influx of refugees from Germany didn’t help either. So in April 1936 he sold his studio and returned to England to open a studio in London as ‘Roye — from Paris’. The London and the West End was no longer as wild as he remembered it, but there was no dearth of unusual sitters and situations.

It was the Summer of 1937 that was the beginning of the phase which was to make ‘Roye’ synonymous with ‘Studies of the Nude’.

In 1938, the jittery period before Munich, Roye was commissioned by the North London Recorder to produce a picture that symbolised the ghastly possibilities of a future war. Tomorrow’s Crucifixion was the result — a surreal image of a naked girl on a cross wearing a gas mask with clouds of smoke in the background. The picture was published on 12th August 1938 accompanied by opinions on it by eminent ecclesiastics and other leaders of the community. It almost occupied the entire front page and caused quite a stir. The picture was way ahead of its time, and the boldness of the paper in publishing should be recognised.

Roye was doing illustrations for such books as T. R. Togna’s Exercises in the Bath and Nan’s Gloster’s Beauty Book when he was contacted by the publishers, George Routledge & Co and asked if could do a book of nude studies. Roye accepted the challenge and was contracted to do Perfect Womanhood, which was published in 1938. Of the forty-eight studies that composed the book several were hung in the London Salon of Photography, and one, Sport, became famous when it was published as a full page picture in the Daily Mirror on the 14th September 1938. It was the first nude study ever published in a British national daily newspaper.

Surprisingly, Roye claims that “the attitude in France of the better class families was less tolerant than that in England towards the photographer specialising in nude camera studies.” He reasons this was due to the fact that in England there were several portrait photographers who, whilst photographing the British Royal Family, had been publicly exhibiting nude studies and publishing them in book form to some acclaim.

Christmas 1938 he holidayed with his wife for nearly two months in Germany. Although he often found the Germans to be unpleasant, he was impressed and intrigued by them.

Around the middle 1939, Purchasing Valium Online Legal, Walter Bird and Roye decided to formed Photo Centre Limited at Walter Bird’s Savile Row studio as a way to share overheads. They produced three books together, the first being the humorously titled Eves without Leaves in 1941. The images seem to be have been taken from the three photographers previous books, and all of them had also been published in the magazine Men Only — the editor of which supplied a tongue-in-cheek foreword. The other two books were More Eves Without Leaves (1941) and Eternal Eve (1947).

In September 1940 during the blitz, a bomb fell on the rear of their studio damaging it irreparably. The bomb-damaged building was looted before suffering a direct hit a few days later. Walter Bird went into the Auxiliary Fire Service and John Everard on a special assignment with the RAF. Roye, however, was exempted from military service due to a recent illness but he did end up doing work for the Ministry of Information and the Political Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office.

With the war, there was an ever-increasing demand for glamour shots and nude studies, so Roye decided to set up a mail order club for photographic books and pin-ups called The Camera Studies Club. John Everard and Walter Bird didn’t want to invest in the company but were happy to sell Roye their pictures. The company proved to be a roaring success resulting in him being commissioned to make the booklet Glamour on Parade, the first in the Spotlight on Beauty Series. The third booklet in the series was the Phyllis Dixey Album which led to Phyllis in Censorland which sold in enormous numbers.

In the middle of 1942, Roye moved to Elcombe Hall in Wiltshire. During 1944, as the only active director of Photo Centre Limited, he opened a studio in Brick Street just off Park Lane. John Everard had made up his mind to emigrate to South Africa, where’s wife, Jane had an established reputation as a writer. Walter Bird had a job with the Crown Film Unit, so, he brought their shares and obtained control of the company.

Roye’s portraiture skills led him to photograph film stars such as Leslie Carol and the future Mrs Profumo, Valerie Hobson. In 1945 Roye was commissioned to take glamour photographs of every woman star and starlet under contract to the Rank Organisation. In August 1945, after he had finished working for Rank, he took a trip to Dublin and stayed there for two whole years. His restless streak, however, soon led him to Canada and the United States. He eventually returned to England in 1952.

Roye’s Camera Studies Club was still going, and in 1953 it published Canadian Beauty. In 1954 with a fellow photographer called Vala, Roye came up with the Buy Msj Diazepam Online, which quickly became popular. Some of the photos were taken at Farley Castle, the home of Roye’s friend, Mitchell-Hedges, an adventurer, traveller and writer, who was apparently was part of Pancho Villa’s revolutionary army.

Mitchell-Hedges was very much the prototype for Indiana-Jones. His claim to fame was his “discovery” of the Crystal Skull of Doom. He claimed to have found it with his daughter Anna at the Maya ruin of Lubaantun while on an expedition to British Honduras (present-day Belize), where he was looking for the ruins of Atlantis.

Mitchell-Hedges wrote that “It is at least 3,600 years old and according to legend was used by the High Priest of the Maya when performing esoteric rites. It is said that when he willed death with the help of the skull, death invariably followed.” Roye took some fantastic photographs a showgirl called Anne from the Eve Club in London, with the skull.

Eleven years after Mitchell-Hedges death his daughter let Frank Dorland, an American art expert and restorer, examine the skull. Dorland declared that it is excellent for scrying and it emits sounds and light, depending on the position of the planets. He claimed that the skull originated in Atlantis and was carried around by the Knights Templar during the crusades. Whatever the unlikely truth of that Mitchell-Hedges actually brought the skull at Sotheby’s in 1943.

As the 1950s progressed more and more publishers and authors were getting into a tangle with the authorities on charges of obscenity. It was totally absurd that some of Roye’s books that had been freely available for years were getting tangled up in this. Rather than be put off, Roye rose to the challenge. He published a series of booklets in a limited edition for private circulation of unretouched nudes. The images were from his back catalogue, but with the pubic hair clearly visible — he was testing the law. In May and June of 1958, Roye was twice charged with publishing an obscene libel. In both cases, he was acquitted. An account of Roye’s brush with the authorities was published in Unique Verdict – the Story of an Unsuccessful Prosecution (1960).

Restless as ever Roye retired to Portugal where he designed and built two private parks. During the 1974 revolution, he was besieged in his house, holding out with a shotgun, and then forced to sell up and return to England. In 1980, he made his final move to Rabat, the capital Morocco, where he remained until he became Morocco’s oldest British expatriate. He was also the longest-serving member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers. Roye fed Rabat’s stray cats, water-skied on the Bou Regreg until the age of 78, took up parasailing at 75, and swam almost to the end. He and his third wife, Marilyn, a Canadian model, celebrated their golden wedding before her death in 1993.

On the 11 June 2002, aged 97, he was found dead by his housekeeper. He had been stabbed at least eight times. Roye apparently knew the suspect. He had four children, three of whom survive him.

After Kamera, the most successful magazine, George Harrison Marks and Pamela Green produced was Solo. Similar to Kamera it was 32 pages of black and white photos, with a colour cover, but dedicated to just one model. It was launched in the Spring of 1958 and ran as a monthly production alongside Kamera to issue No.61 (1968). In practice, like Kamera, Solo was not always published every month. There were, however, sixty-one consecutive issues. Issue number 1, shown below, features Anne Austin and the last issue, No.61, features Sissi Mississippi. In his editorial introduction to Solo, Harrison Marks outlined the aim of the publication:

“In present times, pictures such as pin-ups and figure studies have become an essential part in all facets of the publishing world. Business houses now use photographs of beautiful women constantly in all forms of advertising to sell their products., and photographers, who at one time used flower vases and suchlike to demonstrate the artistry of lighting, now use the curves of the female figure.
In this modern trend, numerous beautiful girls have achieved fame purely by modelling for the artists of the camera. Many others, however, work constantly for we photographers without thought of recognition, and it was with this thought in mind that Solo came into being.

Each month it is my intention to devote an entire book to one of these lovely girls, and in this first edition, I have pleasure in presenting Miss Anne Austin, fast becoming one of the most popular figure models in London.

I hope that this photographic portrait will draw the appreciation I feel this beautiful girl deserves.”

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been spending a bit of spare time working on the next book for Wolfbait. It’s going to Beauty Off-Duty, featuring relaxed, everyday moments caught on camera. Luckily for us, these amiable moments feature charming young ladies in the buff. One model that keeps cropping up is the ever-swell Lee Southern (a.k.a. Grace Jackson). She was a popular model in the 1950s and ’60s and a firm favourite of Stephen Glass (and mine). According to Parade magazine, she was born in Scotland but later lived in Surrey, and was once voted model of the year by the London Camera Club. “Lee keeps in good 37-23-37 shape by dancing, swimming and keeping cheerful,” said Parade. “She danced in Paris, has appeared in films and TV and plays the piano. Her hobby is dressmaking.” Lee appeared in at least three delightful glamour films: Arty Artist, Artist’s Model and Passport to Nudism. They were released in the mid-50s by Diamond Films, Slough, Buckinghamshire (UK).

The enchanting Mina Maureen Liberoff (1931 – 2016), née Felgate, was born in Kensington and grew up during the Blitz. She became a professional dancer and popular model, and as a favourite of the photographer, Stephen Glass, pictures of her would often feature in the naturist magazine, Health and Efficiency — on several occasions, she was the cover girl. In 1950 she went to perform at Paris’ newest night-spot, La Nouvelle Eve, with fellow showgirl Candy Daly, and in 1951 she sailed to the United States to dance at one of New Jersey’s largest night clubs. She eventually settled in the US performing in such shows as The Latin Quarter and Parisian Follies. Pamela Green featured on the cover of another continental magazine — this time Carneval #23, from Sweden, published in 1966. An A4 magazine of 16 pages including the cover with a black and white interior. Not to be confused with the English magazine Carnival. Pamela, on the cover as Rita Landre, is sporting a full bush which is very unusual for her. As most of her images were for the English market in the 1950s, she tended to be shaved. In December 1967 Pamela dissolved her partnership with Harrison Marks so I’m not how involved she was in 1966 when this magazine came out. I suspect the image was taken a few years earlier making it all the more intriguing.

Vitus is an interesting magazine from Switzerland of all places. Twenty-two pages including the cover. There is a three-page article on Physical Education, which quotes Purchasing Valium Online Legal from his book Maids (Elstree Publications, 1947) and even talks about the Swiss Federal Constitution of all things! Eight of the pages feature Pamela Green. What is novel is the front cover is without any type whatsoever. I added the type so people wouldn’t initially assume it was a scan of an interior page. Pamela occasionally interviewed the stars who appeared at the London Palladium for the magazine Show by Axtell Publications. Harrison Marks not unexpectedly got to take the pictures. Here’s a rare picture of Pamela with Danny Kaye in his dressing gown. For those of you too young to remember Danny Kaye was as an American actor, singer, dancer, comedian, musician, and philanthropist. He was famous for being somewhat idiosyncratic. Physical comedy and rapid-fire novelty songs were his shtick. He starred in seventeen movies, including White Christmas alongside Bing Crosby.

I can’t help thinking that Linda Castle is the spitting image of the Harrison Marks model, Mary Deighan. Linda Castle also had a small part in Rag Doll (1961) about an innocent girl in the big city that’s worth watching. Furthermore, I think I recognise her in Peeping Tom (1960) as one of the guests at Helen Stephens’s (Anna Massey) birthday party.

June Palmer (1940-2004) should not need much of an introduction to readers of this blog. Excluding Pamela Green, she was most well known and popular of Harrison Marks‘ models. She started modelling professionally in the late-1950s and in the 1960s she setup Strobe Studios in Clapham, South London, with her husband, Arthur Howell. 

June retired from modelling in the late 1960s. However, she made a surprise comeback at age 37 with a stunning nude pictorial in the November 1977 issue of Mayfair.

Ann Dixon (Hazel Taylor) was former shop assistant from Tyneside who charmed her way to the top of the modelling tree when she came to London in the late sixties. It’s not difficult to see why.

She appeared in Kamera No.75, then 76, 78 and 79, all with photographs from one shoot — the Chinese Garden set of the Harrison Marks’ feature film The Nine Ages of Nakedness. The penultimate issue of Solo, no.60, was dedicated to her, in which a crop of this picture appears on page 48. Ann Dixon also appeared in the Kamera cine films Just Ann (1966) and Sunshine Strip (1967).

There’s sure is something about her five-foot-five height and 37″ 23″ 36″ figure.

The other day I added a Buy Generic Diazepam page to the website. Something I wanted to do for ages. It will make looking and finding past posts easier. Not just for you but for me as well. It’s at the very bottom of the left-hand menu after Categories.

One of the things I noticed was I never did a post about the release of Nudist Camp Follies – Volume II. So here it is folks — another nostalgic look at naturism in 1950s Britain, featuring Audrey Wayne, Elizabeth Walker, Lee Sothern, Mina Feldgate, Nancy Roberts and Pamela Green among others. A lot of the photos were taken at the White House naturist club near Caterham and Spielplatz near St Albans.

The book is part of the Stephen Glass collection. Once again, a big thank you to Colin Gordon for doing the illustrations and Russ and Ray for helping to identify some of the models and locations.

As a professional model, Pamela Green was photographed by several photographers, especially during the early part of her career. This photo of a dark-haired Pam was taken in the early fifties by a Ronald Waite. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about Ronald, other than his association with the address 116 Pears Road, Hounslow, Middlesex, which is stamped on the reverse. If anyone has any more info, please get in touch?

Pamela Green sporting a gipsy look as Rita Landre for the cover of the Swedish magazine Cocktail, no. 5, 1963. It’s lovely to see Pamela Green’s assets being appreciated abroad. The magazine is A4, so quite large compared to similar English magazine of the time. At twenty-eight pages including the cover, the publication is a mix of short stories, cartoons and pin-ups. Mostly black and white with a colour centrefold by Russell Gay of QT fame.
